The traditional MIGF Media Launch at Berjaya Times Square saw the chefs emerge from a parade of supercars

Media from around the world, celebrity guests, the MIGF Festival Advisory Committee and thousands of members of the public looked on in awe as the High Octane Chefs of MIGF 2016 were unveiled for the first time. The concourse of Berjaya Times Square’s lower ground floor was the setting for a huge stage replete with Harley Davidson motorcycles and the introduction of the 28 Master Chefs from 26 participating restaurants, who are set to wow the Malaysian public at Taste MIGF and during the month of October.

The traditional Media Launch set Kuala Lumpur’s city centre abuzz with a parade of Porsche supercars escorting the chefs, the Festival Royal Patron Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar and the MIGF Organising Chairman Dato’ Steve Day from the Malaysian Tourism Information Centre on Jalan Ampang to Berjaya Times Square. A huge crowd eagerly awaited and later cheered the arrival of the 34 cars as they pulled up to the shopping mall’s entrance. The cars revved their engines as they came to a halt before the chefs made their way down to the stage area on the lower ground concourse to the tune of a troupe of kompang drummers.

As the assembled guests resumed their seats following the grandiose arrival, leather clad biker dancers took to the stage to throw some high-octane moves. Superstar magician Dr Mahdi Moudini was the next to bring the morning’s entertainment as he wowed the guests with a handful of mind-bending tricks. His grandest illusion of all he saved for last, as the spectacular motorcycles on stage were covered with a large black cloth. Quick as a flash, the sheet was pulled away to reveal the bikes being straddled by Dato’ Steve and Tunku Naquiyuddin.

After revving their engines, Dato’ Steve then took to the microphone to welcome all the guests, media, partners, fellow diners and friends to this year’s Festival and to thank them for their support. The jovial Organising Chairman beckoned in the new era of the Festival, in which ‘Gastronomy’ has replaced the word ‘Gourmet’ in the MIGF acronym. This change reflects the ever-changing landscape of Malaysia’s vibrant dining scene and gives rise to the most diverse lineup of restaurants in the Festival’s 15-year history.

And with that, the chefs from said restaurants burst onto the stage one-by-one to much applause and cheering from the assembled throng. Familiar faces stood alongside MIGF debutants as the public got its first glimpse of the men and women who will be cooking up a storm throughout the gastronomic extravaganza.

MIGF 2016 is fully under way!

After several group shots, the chefs then made their way down to a specially-created area in which each restaurant showcased one dish from their Festival Menus. Tunku Naquiyuddin, Dato’ Steve and all of the guests made their way around the stations feasting their eyes on the mouth-watering dishes and whetting their appetites before this weekend’s culinary affair.

A glorious buffet was laid on for the launch, provided by Festival restaurant Imara Mediterranean Cuisine, with their fare from the Afro-European basin lapped up by all.

With the Media Launch out of the way, Malaysia’s foodies now have their eyes firmly trained on Taste MIGF, where all the restaurants will gather once more to present sampling portions from their menus. The nation’s hottest culinary affair will see swarms of locals and international visitors alike filling the 14th Floor of Berjaya Times Square Hotel tasting bite-sized portions of our nation’s best restaurants alongside a host of fringe activities. Be sure not to miss any of the action!
