Things are starting to heat up with the reveal of MIGF 2014’s Festival Master Chefs

In contrast to the ice-cool introduction of last year’s Malaysia International Gourmet Festival, the media launch of MIGF 2014 and its preview event, Taste MIGF, was a sizzling affair. Under the eager gazes of the media and members of the public alike, 31 Festival Master Chefs exploded onto the scene at Sunway Pyramid amid a dramatic cloud of smoke, perfectly exemplifying the Festival’s theme this year of ‘Red-Hot Chefs’.

“Every year our chefs do their best to raise their standards, and every year we see something different, which is incredible,” said Dato’ Steve Day, MIGF Organising Chairman, paying tribute to the creativity and dedication of the Festival’s true stars in his welcome address.

Before the stage stood giant polystyrene letters that spelled out ‘Taste MIGF’ – an evident highlight of the two-day food tasting extravaganza, which will be open to the public at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre on the 27th and 28th of September. All you need to participate, explained Dato’ Steve, are Gourmet Dollars – the name given to this year’s MIGF currency – which you can exchange for a sample of some of the most exquisite cooking Malaysia’s finest has to offer.

The MIGF preview event is about more than just food though – it will also feature the Epicure International Gourmet Village, a showcase of stations serving a wide selection of premium products that range from wines and cheeses down to seafood and cigars; the Epicure Lifestyle Workshops, which include talks by experts on subjects such as wine appreciation and essential oils, as well as cooking classes by some of the Festival Master Chefs themselves; and finally the brand new LuxuryPlus Showcase that highlights all things luxurious such as high end properties, luxury holidays and more with the accompanying LuxuryPlus Workshops.

After the informative speech, it was then time for the main event of the launch – the introduction of the Red Hot Chefs! A stunning video compilation of all the Festival Master Chefs and their delectable dishes gave the audience an excellent preview of their personalities and cooking styles, before spurts of smoke heralded the entrance of the Chefs themselves in the flesh as they burst onto the stage to loud applause.

Once all the 31 Chefs stood proudly on the stage, they were joined by the Festival Royal Patron, Y.A.M Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, a staunch supporter of the Festival in this capacity since its inception in 2001, Dr Junaida Lee bt Abdullah, Deputy Secretary General (Management) of the Ministry of Tourism, and Dato’ Steve Day for a photography session, followed by the unveiling of the MIGF 2014 Festival Billboard by Tunku Naquiyuddin – which proved to be as hot as the Festival it advertised.

Then commenced the customary tour of Festival dishes, the VIPs taking their time to examine cuisine that looked as exotic as they sounded while the proud Master Chefs looked on, exchanging greetings and admiring comments as the proceedings continued.

At the press conference held within the same venue, Dr Junaida Lee had this to say about MIGF:

“MIGF is one of the events that is already listed in our calendar of events and has been promoted since last year itself. [It] is one of the most successful homegrown events, which we are very proud of, and also gives foreign visitors a chance to sample some of the fine dining food that is available in one place.”

A break for lunch followed with refreshments served at 32 Bistro Bar, the focus shifted back to the main stage where Chef Wan was preparing a culinary demonstration of epic proportions, equal parts stand up comedy routine and cooking show. His delightful chatter had the entire concourse captivated throughout the two hour performance, taking the audience through the makings of a laksa siam while expounding on any number of subjects from politics to religion and beyond.

Lively music filled the air as enthusiastic MIGF promoters ran a slew of floor activities and contests designed to get the public all fired up for the main event, with the prizes being the coveted Gourmet Dollars. The Taste MIGF roadshow will stay at Sunway Pyramid’s Blue Atrium over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of September, so if you missed it today, go check it out on those dates for a taste of the most delicious festival ever to hit the Malaysian calendar!
