The MIGF 2013 Chefs explode on to the scene with panache

As cool as ice, but smoking hot, the 31 Festival Master Chefs of this year’s Malaysia International Gourmet Festival marched out on to the stage at Sunway Pyramid recently, marking the official Media Launch of the globally famous gastronomic event and its spectacular preview event, Taste MIGF. This year’s theme, ‘Cool Chefs: Cooking with Attitude” was perfectly embodied by the culinary experts as they moved smoothly up and along the catwalk as if born to the business of creative pizazz, channeling pure suave.

“Cool reflects what we all know about our chefs in Malaysia. Without doubt, they are the coolest chefs in the world don’t you agree?” queried MIGF Organising Chairman, Dato’ Steve Day, in his welcome remarks preceding the launch gambit. Last year MIGF introduced the unique concept of Taste MIGF, a preview of what’s in store for food lovers from all walks of life, not just a privileged minority, throughout the month of October.

Dato’ Steve went on to serve up what is on offer for everyone at this truly amazing food heaven– the opportunity to go on a Super Gourmet Safari in the specially created Theatre of Cuisines, featuring tasting portions from Malaysia’s best restaurants all in one area. It’s as simple as buying Taste Tokens – the official currency in the Theatre of Cuisines.

And to add even more flavor to the MIGF pot, the Epicure International Gourmet Village contains gourmet produce from all over the world, and in addition, the ever popular Epicure Lifestyle Workshops, with cooking classes by this year’s Master Chefs as well as wine and cigar appreciation classes and much more. The Media Launch was officiated by Festival Royal Patron, Y.A.M. Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, who has stood in this role since the inception of the Festival 13 years ago. In his speech, Tunku Naquiyuddin eloquently expounded on the growth of the food and beverage industry since the Festival started in 2001, and the tremendous amount of publicity generated by it – “…thanks to the efforts of the organisers and their media partners – MIGF was publicised to a local and global audience of over half a billion people. This makes it one of the country’s most publicised international tourism event!”

Following his speech, Tunku Naquiyuddin and Dato’ Steve then went on the traditional tour of Festival dishes, immaculately displayed in front of the proud Master Chefs. One by one the dishes were reviewed, interspersed with chitchat between Tunku, Dato’ Steve and the appreciative chefs.

The proceedings then moved to Tarbush Restaurant, where a Press Conference was conducted. Dato’ Steve and Tunku Naquiyuddin were joined at the head table by selected Festival Sponsors – Mr Trevor Bull, CEO of Zurich Insurance Malaysia Berhad, Mr Paul Ho, Senior Executive Director of Fujifilm, Ms Jasmine Lee, Director of Marketing at U-Mobile, and Ms Lee Adelaine of Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council.

As Dato’ Steve pointed out, the Festival would not be possible without the continued support of the sponsors, the Principal of which is Tourism Malaysia and The Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Due to his hectic schedule after recently taking up his appointment, Minister of Tourism and Culture Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz could not attend the launch, but assurance came from the Minister that the full force of the Ministry would once again be behind the Festival.

Refreshments were served at Tarbush and Garden Lifestyle Store & Cafe, with all the Master Chefs pulling up seats and mingling with sponsors and organisers while dining on scrumptious canapés.

The day, however, was far from over, as a slew of activities took place back at the Blue Concourse, including Taste MIGF contests and giveaways, cooking demos by Le Cordon Bleu’s Chef Franck, and plenty of cool music to keep things on the roll
