A Taste of the Classics
With ‘Classical Chefs’, we pay homage to the foundations of traditional, pure and honest food, says Organising Chairman Dato’ Steve Day
 

The Malaysia International Gourmet Festival prides itself on raising the bar every year and maintaining global interest with a fresh approach to things. MIGF 2012 was no exception. The Festival’s imaginative theme, “Classical Chefs – A Symphony of Great Cuisines”, was chosen to symbolise and celebrate the roots and traditions of basic good cooking. This struck a chord with many diners at a time when world food trends are getting increasingly confusing.

The introduction of the inaugural ‘Taste MIGF’ as a promotional event prior to the main Festival was also inspirational. For the first time ever, visiting tourists and food lovers from the general public could sample all our Festival restaurants under one roof in the specially created ‘Theatre of Cuisines’. They could also shop for gourmet food and beverage products in an international ‘Gourmet Village’. Taste MIGF was hugely successful and, as a new stand-alone tourist attraction, it brings Malaysia into line with similar ‘taste’ events held elsewhere in the world. Additionally, Taste MIGF gave a huge marketing boost to the Festival proper by generating immediate pre-event publicity for our Festival restaurants.

MIGF 2012 featured cuisines from all around the world, including Japanese, Korean, Thai, Lebanese, French, Italian and Latin American, alongside Malaysia’s own rich food heritage. This wide choice of local and international food reflects the huge impact of MIGF, which has established Malaysia as a worldwide gourmet food destination of choice. The sheer scale of MIGF 2012 would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the Minister of Tourism, Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen and our generous Festival Sponsors and Media Partners, for whom I would like to express my heartfelt thanks.

I would also like to thank and congratulate our Festival Restaurants for once again putting aside their business rivalries to work together in producing yet another outstanding Festival. To everyone involved – from hotel General Managers and restaurant owners, to F&B professionals and PR staff; from restaurant managers and top chefs to the service staff and kitchen teams – the Festival’s success is your success and you deserve all the accolades.

Last but not least, my thanks must go to the distinguished and experienced Special Advisory Committee for their valuable input and to Datin Su Wai Fun and the hardworking team at AsiaReach Events for all the long hours and sacrifice that went into making the Festival the undoubted success it was.

A Fabulous Collective Effort
Each successive Festival demonstrates the classic virtues of the collective effort of the Festival’s key players, says Royal Patron YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tunku Ja’afar 
 

Since its inception in 2001, I have had the great pleasure as Royal Patron of witnessing the spectacular growth of MIGF and the tremendous influence it has had in developing the premium dining scene in Malaysia. In just 12 years, MIGF has flourished to become one of the best-known and most successful gourmet festivals in the world.

The Festival has proved that not only does Malaysia have the most unique and delicious fare – represented by its bounty of wonderful street food – but also the ability to offer world-class premium dining.

This is vital for attracting discerning tourists to our shores. In an industry where competition is as tough as ever, it has also been heart-warming to see our top restaurants and chefs – normally the fiercest of rivals – collaborating in MIGF each year for the overall good of the industry.

Thanks to this collective effort, and the support of our enthusiastic Minister of Tourism, YB Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen, as well as our Festival Sponsors and Media Partners, the Festival’s aims have been surpassed at all levels. Organising an event of this calibre is no mean feat, and, year after year, AsiaReach Events delivers a Festival that exceeds all expectations. Their passion and commitment are admirable.

In closing, I would like to offer my congratulations to the Festival Restaurants, their Master Chefs and everyone involved in what was a fabulously successful MIGF 2012.

The Malaysia International Gourmet Festival is an exciting highlight of the Ministry of Tourism’s Fabulous Food 1Malaysia initiative that pays tribute to the vast array of local and international cuisines that are found in this wonderful country.

Food is one of Malaysia’s biggest drawcards, and while our street food has long been famous, MIGF has shown the world that we now have the complete dining product; that in addition to sumptuous hawker fare, we can also offer our visitors world-class premium dining and international cuisines of every type.

This year, MIGF was publicised to a local and global audience of close to half a billion – which makes it one of the country’s most promoted international tourism events. In fact, MIGF is now globally recognised as one of the premier food festivals in Asia – one that consistently tops the online search-engine rankings. All of this publicity has been instrumental in increasing the popularity and profitability of our premium restaurant sector, injecting vigorous growth to the industry as a whole.

Along the way, we have witnessed the development of a range of international cuisines and a level of service unimaginable a decade ago. Just knowing that Malaysia has a high reputation for quality food and premium dining is a key factor in persuading affluent international travellers to choose Malaysia as a tourist or MICE destination over other countries.

I would like to congratulate the Festival Organiser, AsiaReach Events, for yet another outstanding team effort, and also extend my appreciation to all the top restaurants and their Master Chefs, for working together to make this event the magical international happening it undoubtedly is.

Malaysia Truly Asia!
