A Brand-New Ingredient
On 28 September at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, a brilliant new MIGF innovation was introduced – Taste MIGF
Your rating: None Average: 5

For the first time ever, the general public was invited to sample the mouth-watering delights from all 28 of the restaurants participating in MIGF 2012. “In previous years, the spectacular MIGF Gala Launch was open only to an exclusive list of the country’s who’s who,” says MIGF Organising Chairman Dato’ Steve Day. “Now, with the introduction of Taste MIGF, food lovers from everywhere, and from all walks of life, can experience the unique atmosphere – and the superb culinary offerings – of this award-winning, regionally renowned gourmet festival.”

In this first-ever Festival preview event, Taste MIGF invited the general public to the specially created Theatre of Cuisines, where they could go on a Super Gourmet Safari of delicacies from this year’s line up of 28 premium MIGF restaurants. Each of these restaurants offered exquisite selections from their exclusive MIGF 2012 Special Festival Menus, prepared by their Master Chefs and which covered an impressive range of cuisines from all corners of the globe.

Taste Tokens
Along with free admission to the Theatre of Cuisines, all visitors needed to do to sample the Festival Menu offerings was purchase Taste Tokens, which was the only currency on the day.

These were valued at RM5 each, sold in booklets of 10 for RM50, and given the outstanding quality of the taste samples, which were priced at a mere 1-3 Tokens, this represented extraordinary value. Additionally, the samples themselves were created to allow both a perfect appreciation of the various dishes, but of a size to enable a wide range of tastings.

A smash hit!
From the opening of the doors at 11am through to the close 12 hours later, thousands of visitors dropped by Taste MIGF. Apart from the fabulous gourmet food and drink, there was the combination of a wonderfully executed performance by an eight-piece string ensemble, vibrant Cuban music from Alma Latina, wildly colourful stilt-walkers, a stand-out performance by celebrated contemporary violinist Dennis Lau and a dance floor packed by the patrons.

Gourmet Village and workshops

Right next door to the Theatre of Cuisines the Taste MIGF Gourmet Village offered food lovers a further surprise: over 80 food and beverage stations offered the opportunity to sample and shop for a wide range of top quality produce – including fine wines, spirits, cheeses, gourmet chocolates and an abundance of other mouthwatering delicacies from all over the world, including international stations from Italy, Spain, Holland, New Zealand and Kenya.

Chef Wan On Stage
In a further demonstration of Taste MIGF’s range and appeal, Malaysia’s own international super-star Chef Wan conducted two cooking classes, each for one session of the Theatre of Cuisines, at 11am and 7pm.

His inimitable laugh-a minute, learn-a-lot approach to showing how it’s done, won over the packed audience, who truly appreciated this master chef’s advice and experience.

Between these showpieces, a further hit with the gathered food lovers was provided by no fewer than 16 of Malaysia’s top chefs offering further expert cooking classes and workshops.

We’ll be back
All in all, Taste MIGF was a huge success, with many expressing the wish to return. A visitor who wanted to be known as Stella, who had driven all the way from Johor to be at the inaugural event, said, “I was very happy to have made the trip. “I tried all the Taste MIGF restaurants and the food far and away exceeded my expectations. This is a fantastic event and I will be back next year.”

And this MIGF preview will definitely be back, and bigger! Organising Chairman Dato’ Steve Day said he was so pleased with the turnout that he was seriously thinking of expanding Taste MIGF to three whole days in 2013. “This will also be a great opportunity for the country’s hoteliers to market Taste MIGF and the Theatre of Cuisines as part of their tour packages,” he said. “It would be wonderful if tourists could have the option of being in the country during this time and experiencing its premium dining sector all in one place.”
