Kuala Lumpur, Monday 29 October: Jackfruit marinated stingray with a confit of mango? Sabah crabs sautéed in wasabi and coconut? The Malaysia International Gourmet Festival presents a host of new flavours this year with the inaugural Malaysia Truly Asian Cuisine Showcase, being held at the One World Hotel on 31 October 2007. The showcase will be opened by Guest of Honour YBhg Datuk Dr Victor Wee.

The Festival’s Master Chefs will use their unrivalled local expertise to create a menu that combines all the traditional ingredients and influences of Malaysian cuisine – one that each chef believes has global appeal. Each menu will be accompanied by a story that explains the source of its inspiration. Master Chefs will present the ‘piece de resistance’ of their menus at the showcase, for judging by a panel of international chefs, food experts and writers.

Chefs will be create a showcase menu which will be judged on the originality of ingredients and their perspective on why it is a reflection of Malaysian cuisine on an international scale. Showcase dishes will be judged on presentation, consistency, flavour, texture and global appeal. Their will be prizes for the best menu and for the best dish, which will be presented at the MIGF Grand Finale Dinner on 3 December.

All creations from the showcase will be included in a book published by Festival Partner, Malaysia Kitchen, featuring the chefs, photos and description of the dish and the story behind it. Malaysia Kitchen is a Government initiative whose aim is to establish thousands of Malaysian restaurants worldwide. “We want the showcase to help create an entirely new range of Malaysian gourmet cuisine that can become mainstays of Malaysian restaurants overseas” says MIGF’s Organising Chairman, Dato’ Steve Day, “we want to put Malaysian fine dining on par with the greatest gourmet cuisines in the world.”

As well as representing all the races of Malaysia, the Master Chefs of the Festival come from such far flung places as France, Germany, Switzerland, India, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Canada and Thailand. Given their multinational palates and varied experiences, it will be interesting to see the menus and dishes they come up with.

The Malaysia Truly Asia Cuisine Showcase will provide an excellent foundation to build on the work done by Malaysia Kitchen in promoting Malaysian cuisine internationally.
